Professional growers have been growing in hydroponics, since the 1980s. Finnish and Swedish growers have been at the forefront of this development. This is one of the main reasons of the large assortment of herbs and lettuce pots available in the grocery stores. Now this technology has been developed allowing anyone to easily grow these delicacies at home. Lettuce, herbs, strawberries, chilies and tomatoes are perfectly suited. There is really no limit to what people can grow at home.

Growing in water - how does it work?
The basic principle of hydroponics is based on favoring the plant, not the soil. The roots of the plant do not need to take a detour or put energy into finding nutrients. In hydroponics, the nutrient solution is distributed directly to the roots. The roots thrive and quickly the plants fill the kitchen garden with healthy and resilient roots. This guarantees rapid growth and large harvests.

In hydroponics, the plants are placed so that the roots easily reach the nutrient solution. The quickest way to start the kitchen garden is by using cultivated plants in pots. It is important that these pots have holes in the bottom so that the roots reach the nutrient solution. When growing from seeds, the plant needs a growing media in which it stands. There is a variety of growing media that can be used like different capsules or pods, coconut, peat, or mineral wool capsules.

There are two different principles for hydroponics depending on the system used to provide the roots with the nutrient solution and oxygen they need:

  • A passive system where there’s no water circulation and the roots search for the nutrient solution with the help of capillary power. This is not the most recommendable system since the lack of water circulation limits the oxygen,
  • And an active system where the nutrient solution circulates with the aid of a pump allowing the oxygen to be mixed in automatically.

Tregren's kitchen gardens use an active system with a pump that supplies the plants with nutrient solution. The supply is controlled by the Smart Gardener app that doses the right amount of solution for the specific plant(s) in the garden.

The nutrient solution consists of water and nutrients with the amounts varying from plant to plant and the stage of growth. Plants that produce only green leaves require different nutrients than plants that produce fruit.

The rapid growth is due to the fact that the plant uses only the substances it needs from the nutrient solution and does not devote energy to seeking nutrients. Growth is therefore fast. From seed to harvestable plant it only takes 4-8 weeks.

Grow all year-round
A good growing lighting, specifically developed for plants, enables growing plants all year round. The energy-efficient growing lamps not only give a pleasant light, but also make the plants cope without any other source of light.
So it is no surprise that more and more people are discovering hydroponics. Large harvests, year-round growth, easy, fast allowing people to be self-sufficient of herbs and lettuce.

The product price is the price in euros which is shown with the product information. The price includes VAT 24%. We reserve the right for price changes. For countries outside EU the price at checkout after placing ordering country will appear without VAT. For orders outside EU the customer will bear the VAT and customs cost at receiving the order directly to freight forwarder.

Payment methods
The products and their shipping fees are paid when ordered. You can pay with the following payment methods in the Internet bank: Visa, MasterCard and Visa Electron cards. Ordering and paying take place safely in a SSL-protected connection.

Delivery methods and shipping fees

Time of delivery
We deliver the products to you via DHL Express delivery securely and quickly. You will recieve the package in approx. 1-3 days after we have received your order. If the delivery of the product is delayed for some reason, we aim to inform you about it as soon as possible.

Because of Covid-19 the delivery time is 5-7 days until further notice.
In July and around Christmas our time of delivery is 14 days.

Delivery to European countries 14,9 Eur for orders worth less than 89 Eur, to countiries outside Europe 25 Eur.
The delivery is shipped to you by DHL, free delivery to Europe for orders worht more than 89 Eur delivered by GLS. 

The right of return and change of products
All our products have a 14-day right of change and return according to the Finnish Consumer Protection Act. The product shall be unused and in the original sales package. Please always first contact our customer service at info@tregren.com before sending your order back to us.

We will return the price as stated in the Finnish Consumer Protection Act. The returns will be refunded to the credit card. When you change products, we will refund the value of the total sum of your order. We will return the extra money, if the amount of the return is greater than the amount of the new product(s) you have ordered. We will compensate the refunds at latest in 30 days after the return. Wrong or faulty product

Cancelling an order
If you want to cancel your order and the delivery has not yet been shipped, you can cancel the order by contacting our customer service. If the delivery has already been shipped, you should act as described in the return instructions.
