It all started from the passion to food and friends

Markus “MaCCa” Nilsson, Founder and CEO of Tregren, is a passionate home chef that loves to prepare most delicious meals for his big family and friends. As any chef, Markus makes an effort to cook his dishes using the most delicious and fresh ingredients. Aromatic herbs are a huge component in any cuisine as they provide identity and soul to the food. So, Markus always used a lot of pre potted herbs that can be bought in any supermarket or garden center here in Finland. He soon started to realize that he rarely used more than 30% of each pot on the dish he bought the herb pot for and the remaining would go bad after only a couple of days at home. One winter he calculated to have bought around 100 pre potted plants, which meant that about 70 pots were thrown away. This huge waste of food and resources worried him and he started to research on the problem on a larger and global scale.

Markus soon realized that the food waste problem is much bigger than this, as he soon found out that 45% all vegetables and fruits produced globally for human consumption goes to waste every year. He also learned that food waste alone makes up for 9% of the humanity’s ecological footprint.

Shaken by this he decided to take action and make an impact in solving this problem. He started working on developing a product that would allow for anyone to grow their own herbs and vegetables at home. Knowing that not everyone has a green thumb he wanted to make user experience as easy as possible. To make his project even more ambitious, Markus wanted to develop a product that not only provided great functionality but also was a great interior decoration piece that would look great in any home.

“Ten years ago growing food inside your home was seen as something of a science fiction dream, which I thought was somewhat awkward as we have been growing our own food for centuries only to forget this in the last 60-80 years. If I could enable everyone to grow their own food, it would not only reduce the ever growing amount of food waste but it would also provide healthy and nutritious food for us.
Another strong drive for me was the fact that as a father of 5 children, I wanted to work with something that would help save the planet instead of destroying it.” says Markus.

And from this project, in June 2010, Tregren was founded. The company is specialized in developing and producing ecological, stylish and user-friendly urban gardening solutions.

The three core values were also established right from the start and they function still today as the guidelines for all our activities.:

  • Joy of simplicity – gardening needs to be easy so that everyone can experience the joy of success
  • Nordic design – representing Tregren’s roots in Finland, the products’ Nordic design combines style and functionality with inspiration from the northern wilderness
  • In terms with nature – a guideline followed at all levels of the company to always taking the best effort in minimizing the carbon footprint of its products and activities.

Recognized worldwide for its tech and design industries, Finland played a huge role in allowing the company to access the best R&D resources and talented designers.

“It has been a long and challenging journey to get this far, but there are only a few days during these 10 years I would like to change. There will certainly be new challenges and I feel confident that we are well equipped together with our partners to meet all new opportunities and continue shaping the world we live in” Markus concludes.

During the first 10 years Tregren has launched three generations of kitchen gardens and developed a patented vertical garden, sold products to more than 40 countries and won design awards as well as consumer test. It has certainly been a wonderful adventure so far- Stay tuned for part II of Tregren’s journey, we will be publishing in the coming week.
